Faircare: A New Direction for Health Care and Policy in Ireland

James Reilly

Ireland spends close to the EU average on health (on a per capita basis) yet Irish people receive a level of service well below the EU average. Ireland’s health service is ranked 15th in Europe for quality and 24th in terms of value for money. The following report summarises a constructive approach to improve the health sector by guaranteeing access to health services; it also emphasises fairness and transparency in systems delivery, as well as patient choice. A perceived gap in vital leadership is addressed by this plan, which places responsibility for the health service back where it belongs– with the Minister. The FairCare proposals outlined here provide the road map for radically changing the Irish health system.
